THE IMPORTANCE OF SHOES. TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE?

Men really don’t get why shoes are so important.  My last boyfriend only had four pairs of shoes, two of which were trainers.  I remember our last holiday together he bitched at me taking away eight pairs of shoes for a five-day break.  What don’t they get, why you need different shoes for different outfits?  Maybe other men understand?  What has been your experience? Have you used shoes in a storyline? Or read something interesting about shoes in a story?  And what about foot fetishists? I’d love to hear your comments here on the blog, the BVS Facebook page, or my Facebook page. We...

BOOK BLURBS, THE AGONY, AND THE ECSTASY!

BOOK BLURBS, THE AGONY, AND THE ECSTASY! APRIL 5, 2018 I was chatting with an author last night, with me agreeing to help write the blurb for her forthcoming book. That conversation triggered a memory.  It seems to me, that all the writers I know hate writing the back blurbs.  I don’t know what it is about the blurb that makes them so tricky to write, it is only a synopsis after all. Though I know authors that hate writing those too.  Maybe it is the idea of condensing your book down to a sellable essence?  A teaser that entices...

ROMANCE! WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW.

I had a conversation with a friend who is a writer the other day on social media.  I had just recently read her script, and I had agreed to have a chat with her about why I wasn’t going to recommend it to Ric.  I stress I don’t do this all the time.  The writer is a friend, and I thought it would be easier to chat about it. During the conversation, she said that she didn’t read romance novels. In fact, she confessed that she didn’t like the genre that much. It had been easy to tell from her...

HUMP DAY! A QUESTION FOR READERS AND WRITERS. FIRST OR THIRD PERSON?

Hump day and I am in the mood to chat  I have immersed myself in scripts this week, read one that I will recommend we publish, more on that in another blog. The thing I wanted to chat about is a writing style.  A trend I have noticed is we seem to be getting more scripts coming in, written in the first person.  What are your thoughts on this?  Do you like stories written in third or first-person? Does it matter? Does it just come down to the quality of the writing? From my writing perspective, I feel more comfortable...

MONDAY, A NEW WEEK, A NEW SHEET OF PAPER TO WRITE ON.

I hear people say that they don’t like Mondays.  I have never really felt that way.  I have always seen Monday as a brand new, spiral, reporter pad and I am the first one to make a mark in it. Monday always feels full of opportunities and hope. A chance to start again. Do you feel the same?  Is Monday morning a new hope? Or a chore? If you are starting anew and could do anything, go anywhere, where would you go? And what would you do? My Monday starts with reading and replying to e-mails and messages.  I have...

WISHING YOU A PEACEFUL EASTER

g

I was at the supermarket yesterday and thought I would treat myself to an Easter egg.  It was on sale at half price, so I thought what the heck, I currently don’t have a boyfriend, so I am not expecting to get chocolate as a gift.  It has been a long week here, so last night I decided to go out with friends.  So here I sit with a coffee and nibbling on a piece of chocolate.  Could life get better? I don’t think men quite get chocolate in the way we do.  There is something just so nice and laid back,...

IN PRAISE OF A GOOD THESAURUS

When writing, have you ever found your words becoming repetitive? Or maybe stuck, looking for the right words? This has been an issue both as a writer and a reader.  As a writer, I do seem to fall into the traps of writing things in the same way.  I think it is all a part of your writing style, but saying the same way each time is a bit boring.  I have read scenes in published books and submitted manuscripts where the story has suffered from this.  One story I read had five almost identical lovemaking scenes.  I think it is...

ARE MEN FROM MARS AND WOMEN FROM VENUS?

I love my job.  Ric and the team make it a great job to do.  It has been an interesting week at BVS, as a new book is out, Perilous Love by Jan Selbourne. Along with that work, I have been reading scripts too.  It strikes me that men and women writers see the build-up to sex scenes very differently. I had two scripts to read from men and three from lady authors.  I am not saying that men can’t write a good romance.  I have read a lot that can write a great romance.  I am just talking about the five...

BOOK NEWS! A NEW BOOK OUT TODAY!

I am delighted to see this book hitting the shelves.  I mentioned it in a blog a while back.  I loved this book from the moment of reading Perilous Love by Jan Selbourne.  Let me give you a feel for the story. Adrian Bryce has led something of a playboy lifestyle, playing fast and hard with a beautiful seductress until the British government sends him on a spying assignment. The deadly mission sees Adrian and his family running for their lives through a war-torn Europe. On the perilous road to home, a web of spies and assassins surround them on all sides....

LOVE IS IN THE LYRICS OF A SONG.

Have you ever used song lyrics in one of your stories? This was a hot topic in the office this week. I love song lyrics because of the poetry of them and was going to reference them in a story I am writing.  Then I was told that you need permission to use them. I don’t know why that came as a surprise, but it did. Is it just me or have other authors been surprised by this rule? Perhaps you’ve seen an Indie author use song lyrics because they didn’t know about the permission and fees involved. I was...
