ROMANCE! WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW.

I had a conversation with a friend who is a writer the other day on social media.  I had just recently read her script, and I had agreed to have a chat with her about why I wasn’t going to recommend it to Ric.  I stress I don’t do this all the time.  The writer is a friend, and I thought it would be easier to chat about it. During the conversation, she said that she didn’t read romance novels. In fact, she confessed that she didn’t like the genre that much.

It had been easy to tell from her writing that she didn’t know much about the writing of romance stories.  I think you have to read romance stories to be able to write a good romance story. You might be romantic, but that doesn’t give you the nuts and bolts of how to write.  Research is everything.  You need to get to know your subject.  My writing is quite a niche market; I write domination and submission stories. I have had to do quite a lot of research.  It is time-consuming, but I think it is really important to get it right.

How much time do you read in the genre you write in? Maybe you would like to share the lengths you go through to research your stories?

I’d love to hear your comments here on the blog, the BVS Facebook page, or my Facebook page. We have a twitter page too and we are always happy to follow people that follow us.
