This comes about after an incident in the bar a couple of nights ago. I am not a prude, I have been an erotic artist for a lot of years, have written erotic romance for over 12 years, so I am unshockable. Yet, the other night in a public bar, a couple engaged in a series of deep open-mouthed kisses, in combination with groping each other. I am not shocked by this, in the right place it is fine, a sex or fetish club, maybe a darkened corner of a nightclub would be fine, but in a brightly light bar? It was just inappropriate. I tried to defuse the situation with a little humor and said, “I’d take her home mate, if I was you, she looks about ready to me!” The couple took the not so subtle hint and left. We then had a chat about it; I asked if others thought it was inappropriate or was I being a bit of a kill-joy? The majority agreed with me. Someone made a rather smutty comment about it would have been ok if it had been two girls kissing. But I disagreed with that too for the same reasons if it was done privately or in an appropriate place it is fine. But in public, when a kiss turns into foreplay, is that ever really acceptable?
How do you feel about affection in public? What would you do under the circumstances? Would you turn away, ignoring it? Or get annoyed when you see a couple making out in public? Maybe your take is to think, how sweet or maybe I wish I had my partner here too? Perhaps you think it belongs behind closed doors?
When you’re writing, do you take account of where your characters are? Or if the mood stricks your characters, do you let your characters just go at it regardless of where they are? Does it ever matter in fiction?
I would love to hear if you have any thoughts, views, and stories you might like to share, on the blog, Facebook or Twitter.
