SOMETHING IN THE AIR TONIGHT. THE SMELLS THAT TURN YOU ON.

j

Do you like your lover to smell a certain way?  The perfume industry is worth an estimated $38.8 billion.  Celebrities have their own designer perfumes.  Is it the celebrity image we are buying into when we pick a fragrance?  Or is it just the smell?

There are a few points I would like to make.  On the writing side, I think it is important to consider the smells, both good and bad, in your stories.  The addition of smell can deepen the point of view for the reader, as they will draw on their own experiences.  Yes, there are seasonal smells of Christmas, Thanksgiving, summer, autumn, spring.  But what about the smells of the characters.  That just made me think of the line, “The roar of the greasepaint and the smell of the crowd.”  In romance stories, there is often mentioned the perfumes, musky, or citrus scent of aftershave.  But what about other smells.  When thinking about your partner, do they use certain shaving cream with a smell you particularly like?  Maybe they use a certain soap, body wash, moisturizer?  Maybe your partner likes a particular perfume on you? Or maybe a shampoo with a special smell?  It is a good opportunity to explore this in your story or the development of a character.  Another thought on smells, what about natural body odors?  Manly sweat as opposed to body odor.   What about the aroma of love?  But be careful not to gross your audience out with too much detail there.

I would love to hear if you have any thoughts, views, and stories you might like to share, on the blogFacebook or Twitter.
