I have talked about obsessive writing in the past, but do you really feel that you can’t take a break from the PC? Mac? Or a tablet? I know in the same way, some people just can’t put the phone down. FOMO, or Fear Of Missing Out, is a recognized condition. I have seen it in the bar as a phenomenon. A growing percentage of people seem more interested in messing about with the phone than having a conversation. It is something I consider very sad; another trend is rather than having a chat about a topic, a debate on who said what, when and where, the subject is googled. And what could have been an interesting conversation is settled in thirty seconds, with Wikipedia.
Back to the subject of taking a break, as writers, do we ever switch off? Or are we always looking for bits of detail for our stories? I have told you about my working obsessions in the past. When I was talking about this subject last night to one of my authors, she said, “For god’s sake don’t tell the one about you on the hospital trolly.” And of course, I won’t mention that story. But I am obsessive about work. I had four days of holiday last year at a rather grand hotel in the UK and took work with me. I am not saying it is a good thing. There are many drawbacks to being obsessed with work, and there are costs, primarily to your health. I am not going to go into that here. I am curious, have others had this problem with feeling chained to your PC? Or workstation? And what do you do about it? Have you taken work on holiday? Or into a hospital? What does your partner have to say about that? Have you been compelled to write or read in funny places?
I would love to hear if you have any thoughts and stories you might like to share, on the blog, Facebook or Twitter.
