I have had a couple of letters on the subject I blogged about a little while ago. The subject was about our readers, and do they see our characters in the same way as we see them? And does it matter? I had a wide variety of views on the subject. Some writers were so passionate about making the readers see their characters in the same way that they did. An interesting technique a couple of writers shared, was to use the image of a famous actor to give the reader a kind of shortcut. Other writers were almost indifferent, letting their readers paint their own pictures of the hero, heroine and other characters. A few readers defended their right to see the characters in any way they wanted to. All the views have their own validity.
I did get a message, the sender wished to remain anonymous, but was more than happy for me to share. She explained that she had been chatting with a guy online. They had been swapping messages for a while and had talked openly. It was obvious that they were getting on really well. She felt it a little odd that there was very little info about him on his FB page. No photos of him. She tried googling him, still really nothing, no clue to what he looked like. This lady asked if they could skype, again he was reluctant, but he agreed to chat on the phone. She was delighted to find that he had a deep velvety voice, the guy came across as totally sincere. “I felt a lot better about it because he sounded so normal, yet there was a bit of mystery. He said that because of his job he didn’t put pics on the net. Well, that made him even more mysterious. It made me think of James Bond, 007, Danial Craig, as a spy. I was wetting myself to see what he did look like. As our conversations were becoming more steamy, I kept on asking for a pic. I did the whole, I’ll show you mine if you show me yours, conversation. It was obvious he was keen to see me, not that I am much to look at. We had both confessed to being in our 40’s, expectations were not that high. It was more about curiosity wanting to see who I was talking too. He could see what I looked like through my FB profile pics. I said it was a bit unfair not to see him.
At this point in our conversations, I was having the best phone sex of my life. We had been talking on the phone almost every night. One night, and shall we say the conversation was mega hot and I took a headless selfie, I was all a bit hot and sweaty, but I was in my best lingerie. I just wanted to try and tempt him into sending a pic. A minute later, a pic popped up on the screen. The image totally killed it for me. A man the size and shape of Jaba the hut, with a spent penis in his hand is an image I will never get out of my head. We never spoke again.”
Highlighting the danger of bringing reality into fantasy.
