WHY DO WE WRITE AS WE DO?

This question was prompted by last weekend’s exhibition.  A friend of mine was working on a collage picture.  A second artist came up to her and asked: “Why are you a collage artist and not a painter?”  My friend was outraged, how dare an artist give the impression that her college had less value than a painting.  I thought about the nature of the question.  Do authors who write for an adult audience look down on children’s’ writers?   Do thriller writers think less of romance writers?  Or non-fiction writer looks down on fiction?  Is there a hierarchy of writing?  And if there is what do you think about it?  I work across the genre and have been published as a children’s writer, romance and non-fiction and other than subject matter.  I have never thought there is a difference in genre, as in one being superior to another, but maybe I am odd?

So why do you write what you do? Do you tell your family what you write?  Do you ever switch genre?

I would love to hear your thoughts, stories, or any views you might like to share.  Here, the blogFacebook or Twitter.
