DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PLACE TO WRITE OR TO READ?

A discussion with an author friend prompted this question about favorite places to read or write.  Reading is simple, anywhere and everywhere.  I am always reading.  Either scripts, of which there is an unending supply, or I read a lot of books for pleasure.  Mostly audiobooks as I can multitask, gardening, cooking or painting mostly and yet there is my favorite place, the bath.  I love to read in the tub.  It is a place I chill and take stock of the day.  Where do you read?  Is there a reason for reading there or is it just a joy to read there?  A favorite chair? The garden?  There is simply not a time when I don’t read.

The question did make me think about my writing.  Out of necessity, I have written in some pretty odd places.  Usually with time on my hands at the hospital, thankfully waiting for other people to finish their appointments I have set up camp in the coffee shop and got on with whatever story I am working on.  There have been times when I have been in the hospital waiting for my own procedures, and I have been on a gurney laptop balanced on chest writing as I am wheeled into an operation room, really no exaggeration.  Another very true story.  I was undergoing a procedure.  I did not need to be sedated.  To pass the time a nurse asked what I did for a living when I told her I was a romance publisher, she started telling me about her novel and asked how she could contact me.  As it happened I always have business cards with me.

What about you?  Is there a special place to read or write?  Do you need complete silence to concentrate or do you need things going on around you?  Maybe music?  The author Ian Rankin writes to the sound of rock music.  J. K. Rowling started to write the Harry Potter books in a café.

As always I’d love to hear your thoughts, experience, stories, or any views you might like to share.  Here, the blogFacebook or Twitter.
