In life and in literature is there anything more tantalizing than something just out of reach and yet the hope is there that you will receive your prize. I think it works well in the arena of romance and erotic romance. For romance, there can be the social dance of will the characters finally consummate the relationship in bed. For some storylines, it can hold the reader on the edge of will they won’t they for the length of the book. In erotic romance, the dance can be very different, by the nature of the genre, you are almost always promised sex, yet the tease and denial element can be used to great effect. For example, you may have a love scene where one partner holds the other at the brink of climax. For a skilled writer, there is a lot of mileage in that tease and you can grip the reader, have them at that moment, making them want the climax but hold it just out of reach.
This mimics life, in bed, if you happen to have a skilled lover, but you experience it in other ways in life. It can drive you mad when someone in your life that you care about, takes hours or maybe even a day to get back to reply to your text or call. You know they are not avoiding you and you know they are busy, yet the wait can be excruciating. Although you know it is not practical, in an ideal world what you want is for them at your beck and call.
I LIKE THE GIRLS THAT DO
by
Max Miller
I like the girls who do,
I like the girls who don’t:
I like the girls who say they will,
And then decide they won’t.
But the girls I like the most of all,
And I know you’ll think I’m right,
Are the girls that say they never will,
But look as though they might!
As always I’d love to hear your thoughts, experience, stories, or any views you might like to share. Here, the blog, Facebook or twitter.
