As a bit of a tech geek, I have been watching with interest the development of virtual reality. A lot of technology has been driven by the sex industry. I remember the boom of video technology in the 1980s. The uptake of the video seemed slow. People stayed at home to watch their favorite TV shows. In the UK there were no cable or on-demand services. Even so, the video seemed slow to take off. Then porn switched from super 8 real film projection to video……. Boom.
Now the virtual reality, the technology has been around for a while, with little showing up on the radar. Until the sex industry lends a hand, as it were. Now, couples can use sex toys over long distances. There was a scene in the movie “The Ugly Truth” with a remote-controlled sex toy, which I found very funny. This new generation of toys uses blue tooth technology and can be operated by two people from anywhere with an internet connection. And with new virtual reality programs, you can even operate the toys on your own.

But where is the human touch? A cuddle and contact after the sex? Doesn’t it cheapen the experience without human contact?
There is the geekiness part of me that is hoping one-day for the reality of the Star Trek holographic suits, how cool would that be? I guess it depends on your point of view. I can see the drawbacks, to me it does feel a bit cold and I worry that people will go to something like this rather than to seek out a real person to have a real relationship with. You see trends where you get two people in the bar and rather than talk, they spend their time Facebook messaging and sending each other and their friends jokes. Personally, I find that sad.
