THE AGONY OF CHOICE.

It is a plot device I have seen used a lot where the hero or heroine has a profound choice to make. “Sliding Doors”, was a movie that had the life-changing decision of the heroine making it onto a subway train, two scenarios take place. In one, she gets on the train and comes home to find her boyfriend, in bed with another woman. In the second, she misses the train and arrives after the woman has left. In the first scenario, Helen dumps the boyfriend, finds a new man and gradually her life improves. In the second, she becomes...

HAPPY CANADA DAY! YAY!

I just wanted to give a shout out for Canada Day.  It is the national day of Canada and marks the anniversary in 1867, of the day the country’s three colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick were united.  They came together to form one single Dominion that was part of the British Empire and is now a member of the Commonwealth. The celebration is often referred to as Canada’s birthday and sees Canadians celebrate both at home and around the world. Others refer to the holiday as Dominion Day or by the French phrase Le Jour de la...

DRESSING UP FOR DATES? OR COMFORTABLE IN JEANS?

g

A friend of mine was going on a first date with what she hopes will be her new boyfriend. I was around at her place helping her to pick out clothes for the date. While we were looking through her closet, it was clear my ideas, and hers were very different.  It is hot here, so I had thought of a summer dress, she was thinking of jeans and a top.  If it had been me, I would have chosen a dress, but maybe I am old fashioned?  He seemed like a nice guy, and I would have dressed up. ...

THE FUN AND DANGER OF FLIRTING.

Flirting can be a lot of fun.  It is the elements of tease and denial.  I guess that is the most alluring aspect when flirting.  How far dare you go? What if you flirt too much and go over the edge? To begin with, flirting feels as it does at the start of a game of table tennis.  You slowly tap the ball back and forth, a question here, a cheeky answer in return.  The questions and answers slowly becoming more risque as the soft tennis match turns a little more vigorous, the questions a little more probing the replies...

IF YOU HAVE A FREE ROUND-TRIP PLANE TICKET TO ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY?

I love the idea of travel. I love the idea of freedom, freeing the mind and taking a flight of fancy. That has to be one of the most joyous things about being a writer. With a little research, you can go anywhere, do anything, at any time.  The reality is I spend a lot of time working, not that I am complaining, I love what I do, but I don’t get to travel much.  One of the places I would very much like to visit in the United States. I have written a lot about things in America, I...

MY TOP TIPS FOR WRITING ROMANCE.

As I have said before in blogs, romance is the bestselling fiction genre, so it makes sense to write something that a lot of people want to read.  The thing is, romances are harder to write than you might think and I would like to share some tips for avoiding the most common mistakes in writing a romance. Read romances.  You would be surprised at how many people who think they can write a romance and don’t actually read romantic stories. If you’re not interested in reading this genre, it’s going to come across in your writing. Most romances do...

ARE WE STILL LOOKING FOR THE STRONG SILENT TYPE?

Men portrayed in romance stories seem to be as pigeon-holed as some of the heroines. I so often read descriptions of the man as, tall, dark, handsome.  That said we seem to love that in our stories, so much these are some of the categories I found browsing on Goodreads.  This type of romance novel is so popular that Goodreads has a ton of categories for these types of men. Just to name a few: Best Grumpy Hot Men of Romance, Heroes that are considered standoffish, grumpy, or gruff by others, but wonderful to their lady. When I chat with...
