Men portrayed in romance stories seem to be as pigeon-holed as some of the heroines. I so often read descriptions of the man as, tall, dark, handsome. That said we seem to love that in our stories, so much these are some of the categories I found browsing on Goodreads. This type of romance novel is so popular that Goodreads has a ton of categories for these types of men. Just to name a few: Best Grumpy Hot Men of Romance, Heroes that are considered standoffish, grumpy, or gruff by others, but wonderful to their lady.
When I chat with my girlfriends about what we like in men, qualities listed are a good sense of humor, good conversationalist, interested in us, and ask lots of questions are all traits we like. So why are women attracted to these type of men in romance novels that Mr. Darcy look-a-like, dark and brooding, yet so manly and strong? It’s funny when you think about it. On paper, that type of guy comes across as kind of rude. Yet, this archetypal strong silent man turns up in so many romance novels. So what is it? The mystery? The fact you want the character to share their secrets, or to find out their backstory. Maybe it is the challenge of getting him to open up? Or it could be that this strong silent character just naturally feels protective?
Some of the other Goodreads categories for these types of men that put a smile on my face were.
