I AM PLANNING TO WRITE! HOW DO YOU GET YOURSELF IN THE MOOD TO WRITE?

I am feeling creative. I have been promoting for others all week, so I think it is time to do a bit of writing for me.  I am planning on reworking a project I have been working on for some time, but before I start I have been thinking about the things that make me happy, things that get me in the mood to be creative, things that make me feel good about myself. I saw a list of things, that says how to make a girl happy. When BVS did a promotion day for three of our authors, it...

FANTASIES AND WRITING.

I have written about some of this subject before, but I had a message the other day that made me think about the subject again.  As fiction writer fantasies are, at least on paper are a part of the story writing process.  The author asked, “Is it just work then? At what point can you make the fantasies personal? And then if you use those in a story, are you giving too much of yourself away, especially if they are sexual fantasies?” These are fair points; I guess I would counter with, that unless you tell your readers these were...

THOUGHTS OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS ON MEMORIAL DAY.

This is a relatively new date for me to remember as in Britain we mark 11th November as our time to remember our veterans.  And we don’t have another day to do that, but I feel we should.  I was reading up on this time that commemorates all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. Formally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May.  I am told that volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries, and I think it is a good thing for people...

ARE ROMANCE STORIES A LESSER FORM OF WRITING?

I was chatting last night with girlfriends in a bar last night. I was talking about the work I do for BVS, and I was surprised to hear some of the views of my friends.  Two of them confessed to reading romance stories and said they liked them. The other four turned their noses up at the genre saying it was pulp fiction, not like a proper story.  One said, her dad had caught her with a romance book and had grounded her for a week.  He had also bought her some books that he considered appropriate reading.  Another friend...

CAN YOU HAVE A LAUGH IN A ROMANCE STORY?

Humor is a funny thing, but has it got a place in romantic fiction?  Maybe you have strong views on this? I suppose like all things it depends on how well it is done. Humor can be a great way of relieving tension in a scene. For the life of me, I can’t think of an example in a book where it has worked well. But I would very much like to hear from anyone that has an example of a good piece of humor in a romance story.  I can, however, remember an instance where I laughed out loud...

A FEW IDEAS FOR PLOT TWISTS.

I do love a story that surprises me with a subtle twist, something that will grip you and change your thoughts on where the story is going.  There are the usual ones like the main villain of the story ends up being the hero. And An important character ends up having a hidden dark past.  Also, A character’s dark past finally catches up with them. I thought I’d share a few ideas I have seen recently.  First, the heroine uses her boyfriend’s spare key to enter his apartment. Climbed into his bed in the dark and started kissing him. Only...

A BIG WEEK FOR BLACK VELVET SEDUCTIONS.

I am so excited it is a big week for us here, Perilous Love by Jan Selbourne is now out in paperback and e-book. Click here to read the Prologue and Chapter one.  I have often said how much I loved reading this book.  An interesting fact I only discovered the other day, that the story was edited by our CEO Ric. He doesn’t climb into the editor’s chair very often, so he also saw the potential in this great story. We also have a new book out on Friday, Patrick by Callie Carmen. It is your last chance to get the e-book while it is at the pre-order...

A REAL LIFE ROMANCE THAT RIVALS ANY NOVEL

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was a couple destined for marriage. They did all the right things from the beginning of their relationship. After just one date they had their busy schedules out trying to figure out when they could see each other again. They made sure to keep the relationship to themselves with pretty much just the mutual friend that fixed them up in the know. According to Prince Harry, they fell in love with each other so quickly. It was like the stars were all lined up. Taking a camping trip all alone early on, in the middle...

READING A NEW BOOK IN THE SUNSHINES.

Reading a brand new book in the sunshine, is there anything better than that? There are a lot of things I love about my job. I love reading and working for a publisher; I get to read a lot of books. Another aspect I love is with wireless technology, a lot of my work I can do mobile.  I like going into the studio, where the BVS office is, but it is also nice working outdoors, in the garden, in the park, or in a café. It hardly feels like a proper job; I am so lucky. So what was I reading? I...
