I have written about some of this subject before, but I had a message the other day that made me think about the subject again. As fiction writer fantasies are, at least on paper are a part of the story writing process. The author asked, “Is it just work then? At what point can you make the fantasies personal? And then if you use those in a story, are you giving too much of yourself away, especially if they are sexual fantasies?”
These are fair points; I guess I would counter with, that unless you tell your readers these were your fantasies. While they are in your head; nobody else needs to know. I had the impression that the author was in some way seeing fantasies, in general, a bad thing. On the theme of fantasies generally, I assume as writers we all work out plots in fiction, you have to put yourselves in the positions of your characters after all. How else would you do it, except with your imagination? I think exploring your thoughts in fantasy can only have benefits for your writing. Furthermore, I can see benefits to trying out some of these fantasies within a relationship. This has a couple of advantages I can see, firstly for your writing; you get to see the reactions of your partner. An additional benefit could be in your relationship, a little something to spice things up? Though you might consider that it is fine as it is, I only offer it as a suggestion, something worth thinking about.
