I know when talking to writers, the first question is usually, “How many K?” knowing how many thousand words does give us an indication of how big the piece is and the kind of time needed to do it. Most of us think of writing in those terms, to an extent. Although like so much in life it isn’t just the length that matters, some thought has to go into quality. A couple of instances that come to mind. I was chatting with a writer just the other day, who was talking about the size of the project she was working on, in terms of word count. It was clear that it was quite an undertaking. Many, many chapters, and a very well organized method of writing, in theory, it was truly impressive. The sad reality is that despite a high word count if the words are not used in the right way, it is just those words.
It is one of the things that I like about the short story format. The very nature of the format means you have to be concise, get into the characters and the plot quickly. There is little time to stray from the main point, and I think it is a good exercise for writers to do. I know several authors that do just that may be under different pen names. They tell me it keeps them sharp for when they write novels.
I would love to hear your views, thoughts, and stories you might like to share, on the blog, Facebook or Twitter.
