As authors we build up this view in our minds, we picture our characters and build up a relationship with them. That can be a problem when it comes to cover art. Over the years I had many discussions with authors about there covers and finding pictures that fit their mind’s eye view of the hero and heroine.
Expecting the reader to see things as we do, reminds me of the days before Facebook. We went into chat rooms and massaged people all around the world with no idea of what the people looked like. A kind of blind date if you will. When we got to know people we sometimes found out what they looked like. It was usually a surprise. It is the same with radio personalities; the voice doesn’t always fit the face. The idea that our characters should look the same to everyone feels a bit silly to me. The authors give us stories. I liken the process to the writer giving us the canvas and the paint, and our minds paint the most wonderful pictures.
As an author, how much does it matter to you that the reader sees your characters the way you see them? Do you write in detail about how your characters look? Or are you content to let the reader see what they want?
I would love to hear your views, thoughts, and stories you might like to share, on the blog, Facebook or Twitter.
