I was reading a post on one of the Facebook writer’s groups; it concerned someone posting a thought only to have someone correct the grammar. There were a lot of reactions. I can see both sides of the argument. We are writers and professionals working in the world of publishing. Spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes make us look sloppy. The other side of the coin is we just want to send out a quick message or thought, and we are more concerned with the message than the grammar. I can really understand why it irks the Grammar Janitors and frustrates the writers. For most of us, blogging, tweeting and commenting on Facebook is an activity in addition to our writing. Most don’t have the support of an editor or proofreader. So while we humble writers are just trying to do our best, the mean old Grammar Janitors are picking holes in our thoughts and opinions. As I say, I see the other side of the argument too; it must frustrate the hell out of those gifted in proofreading.
So to the writers. Please forgive the proofreaders they are only doing what they do best. To the proofreaders and pedants. Please cut the writers a bit of slack they are doing the best they can.
With my heart in my mouth, I am off to show this to the kind lady who had been going over my blog posts, hoping that there aren’t too many errors. Please forgive any of my errors that she misses.
I would love to hear your views, thoughts, and stories you might like to share, on all matters grammatical, here on the blog, Facebook or Twitter.
