Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy magazine died aged 91. Hefner began publishing Playboy from his kitchen in 1953. It became the largest-selling men’s magazine in the world, shifting seven million copies a month at its peak. I am interested in hearing points of view. For myself I have mixed feelings, it feels like the end of an era. It is something of an institution but Playboy seems something that should have been consigned to history long ago. Playboy was the nicer side of that sort of business, but still… In the 1970s, I went to an event in a hotel a few doors down from the Playboy club in London. The event had hired a couple of bunny girls to sell raffle tickets, seemed a popular way of selling them as I recall, however, even then it felt manipulative and exploitative to both parties.
A clip of the club back in the 60’s back in its hay day.
on the upside, I remember good articles in Playboy Magazine, but all the guys say that.
