USING MISTAKES OR POOR JUDGMENT TO ADVANCE A PLOT.

God knows we all make mistakes, some more people than others. I have often felt that we are defined by how we handle our errors.  Some people hide, hoping the blunder will go away, other folk face it right up and confess. I suspect most of us admit a problem only when we have to, trying to hide our gaffes as much as we can. So it seems kind of obvious to use mistakes by our characters and their way of dealing with their failures to move our stories forward.

There are a couple of examples that come to mind, where this is explored.

The Caretaker by Carol Schoenig.  In Carol’s book. The story considers her life 27 years of marriage and her not being allowed to work. After being widowed, her gut instinct is to take a job that has been offered, running a villa. Her grown children were against it. Did she make the right decision going against their wishes?

There is another series of questionable choices made in our new book Patrick. In the story, the heroine Jaq makes the dubious choice of dating a few men at once, keeping her options open, keeping them all on hold while she considers trust issues.  Then another suiter Patrick comes along, and her gut tells her to give up the others and take a chance with Patrick.  It is ironic but human, that she doesn’t trust the other men, while she is the one that is keeping her options open. I think that it shows a very genuine response by the character Jaq, which I think is a strength to the story.

I did get a couple of messages after my blog on one night stands, suggesting I might have a puritanical attitude. Let me say, absolutely not. I don’t think I could read as much romance and erotic romance if I didn’t have a very open attitude to sexual encounters.

A couple of our latest stories are on NetGalley, looking for reviewers.

Patrick by Callie Carmen.

Perilous Love by Jan Selbourne.

Naval Maneuvers by Dee S. Knight.
