This has been a bone of contention for me for quite a while. So much so I wrote a book called, Beauty In Every Form. It is a book on positive body image. This has been on my mind this morning. I talk to a lot of authors, artists, models. And most agree that the way the media depict the human form is not realistic images are routinely photoshopped, every blemish removed. The catwalk models are subject to unhealthy eating regimes to keep them thin. Yet as a society we still see it as desirable. The last time I mentioned this subject I got a number replies saying they wanted to see more people with less stereotypical romance body shapes. I just can’t see it happening anytime soon. At BVS we are subject to the same market forces. Is it the case that we feel the need to say that we want more realistic images? Maybe for politically correct reasons? And that secretly we really do like the images that we are shown?
Do any of these thoughts affect your writing? Maybe you try harder to push unconventional body types in your writing? Or is it that we really write for our own fantasies?
Search your secret fantasies, what images work for you? Soft and fluffy? or is it something harder?
I would love to hear your views, thoughts, and stories you might like to share, on the blog, Facebook or Twitter.
