I have had a weekend reading scripts and have come across possible gems and sadly some not so good. There have been a spate of vampire and werewolf stories hitting my desk and wonder if there has been a run of Twilight films about eight or nine months ago. It is interesting how our watching habits can influence some writers. I consider myself rather fortunate that my watching habits don’t encroach on my writing. I enjoy reading George RR Martin’s Games of Thrones, and I am an avid fan of the TV show, but I have never contemplated writing that kind of epic. In the same way, I am a massive fan of Star Trek, I love it all, I have seen almost every TV show, including all the spin-offs and all the movies. I know sad, right? But I have never really strayed into the world of writing science fiction. Another genre I really like is horror, True Blood (though that is in a funny way more of a black comedy), The Walking Dead, Thomas Harris Hannibal Lector stories, but I have never felt drawn to writing anything like that. The closest I came has been with the subject of war. I have never written any military fiction but I have co-written a non-fiction book on the subject of the First World War, though I never fancied writing any sort of fiction on that subject. My fiction genre of choice is romance and erotic romance, I feel comfortable writing in that area.
As a writer, do you switch genre? And are you comfortable with the switch? Do you think that crossing from one genre to another makes your work stronger? Does what you watch influence your writing?
