A conversation in the bar got my mind thinking, have we got to the stage where women pick up men in nightclubs and bars? Is there equality with the pickup? Back in the 1980s, when I was working in nightclubs I am sure it did happen was not really the normal run of things. Men were expected to make the first move, asking something cheesy like “do you come here often?” with the fear of rejection always in the air. Listening to the young lady in the bar the other night, I was surprised at how she spoke about the young men in the clubs. Don’t get me wrong she seemed a nice young lady, but there seemed to be a change of thinking, she seemed much more assertive than ladies I met in the ’80s. Christ, that makes me sound like an old man. Haha. Things change I know, but I have not spotted this new assertiveness coming through in the scripts I am reading. Maybe it has not made it into mainstream romantic fiction? Or maybe just not in the scripts that I am being offered?
In these days of equality is it the case that women are assertive picking men up? If so I am intrigued as to their chat up lines. Are they as bad as men’s chat up lines? Do tell I’d love to know.
