A sad task I have to perform on a regular basis is to reject scripts. One of the biggest reasons is the story is in need of a good editor. As an artist and author myself, I know how attached we get to our work and being that close to our work we often lack perspective. We need someone who can take a step back and dispassionately look at our work. All creative people need a friend or editor who can give brutally honest feedback. I have had scripts where the writer introduces themselves as a professor of this or that and states they do not need an editor. Having read a great many of these scripts and I have to say that the ability to write a scientific paper does not qualify you to write fiction. I am privileged to know some writers who self-edit well, but they are not the norm.
As a writer, Laurie Sanders was my editor for about 12 years, as well as being CEO of BVS. She is a great editor and I learned an awful lot about story structure from her, also what to look for when developing characters, deepening point of view, adding emotion and conflict. Laurie does workshops for writers and offers an editing service, I would recommend those looking for help should contact her.
