Song lyrics in stories is a topic I have hit on before in a blog; the emphasis was more on the song lyrics in the story. I was going through my dad’s old vinyl record collection and came across “Paperback Writer” from The Beatles. I always loved this song; it brings back memories of long summers listening to records with my dad. I still have his old record player, so I played the record again. The lyrics struck me as poignant because it touches on much of my daily BVS work of reading submissions.
Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
It’s based on a novel by a man named Lear
And I need a job
So I want to be a paperback writer
It’s a dirty story of a dirty man
And his clinging wife doesn’t understand
His son is working for the Daily Mail
It’s a steady job
But he wants to be a paperback writer
It’s a thousand pages, give or take a few
I’ll be writing more in a week or two
I could make it longer if you like the style
I can change it ’round
And I want to be a paperback writer
If you really like it you can have the rights
It could make a million for you overnight
If you must return it you can send it here
But I need a break
And I want to be a paperback writer
Becoming a published author is still a dream of many people today. In these days of self-publishing, the goal has never been easier to attain. Why does “Paperback Writer,” written by Paul McCartney, still captures the angst of aspiring writers so well? The job hints at sitting at a desk writing, publishing and making a million. Sadly the reality of being a writer is very different, lots of hours of writing, and if this is your second book, you will still have commitments to promoting the previous book. When you have finished that second novel, it is the rounds of promo, cover reveals, promo, blog tours, and more promo. While looking at ideas for book three.
It does make you ask the question, do I want to be a writer? I think writing is in your blood; you are a writer because it is what you need to be. Are you an aspiring author? What drives you to write? As an author what drives you on?
I would love to know what you think. If you have anything you would like to add or share, I’d love to hear your comments here on the blog, the BVS Facebook page, or my Facebook page. We have a twitter page too, and we are always happy to follow people that follow us.
