IN ROMANCE NOVELS THE ONE SUBJECT YOU CAN’T AVOID TALKING ABOUT IS S*X.

You can’t avoid the topic of sex when you work in a romance publishing house. I try not to talk about it too much in blogs because I don’t want folk to think that is all we talk about here.  But for a couple of reasons, this topic came up.  There are a few parts to this, so I hope you will bear with me.

Ric told me of a discussion he had with a BVS published author, no names, she asked if her new story was sexy enough. I thought this an interesting topic for a few reasons.  How much sex should there be in a romance novel?  When is it too much? And when you consider the sex how graphic should it be?  At what point does romance become an erotic romance?  And when does erotic romance become erotica?  In my opinion, it is a fine line to tread, and that if it is written well a hot bedroom scene is a beautiful thing.

On the subject of bedroom scenes, realistic stripping, or not.  I read a script the other day that every time the heroine walked into the bedroom her clothes fell off effortlessly. As shorthand that is ok, but it is always lovely to read realistic scenes. There is an art to writing it, or it can become comic, the last thing you want to read is tripping over or a naked man with black socks. That always makes me laugh.  So I’d love to hear thoughts about good scenes of stripping you have read or written.

The last one, on the sex topic, was a conversation that came up with another writer, also remaining nameless. She sent me a video; you can click here to watch it. Don’t worry the vid is not porn, just two people talking about oral sex.  The subject of whether oral sex is much more intimate than regular intercourse.  I have to say I had never thought about it in those terms but watching the video made me think about the subject.

If you have anything you would like to add or share, I’d love to hear your comments here on the blog, the BVS Facebook page, or my Facebook page. We have a twitter page too, and we are always happy to follow people that follow us.
