I’m pleased to be able to introduce one of my own favorite authors today. As those of you who read this blog regularly probably know, I’m a fan of erotic romance, and specifically romances which include spanking. Though Black Velvet Seductions publishes books like that today’s author isn’t published by us (the door is always open if she ever wants to be
). I first learned of her book The Knight’s Prisoner in the Spanking Fiction Facebook Group. After buying and reading The Knight’s Prisoner and loving it, I invited her to be our guest here on the blog. Today Renee Rose, one of my favorite authors of spanking romance is going to talk about what makes a good spanking romance. She’s also going to share an excerpt from one of my favorite scenes in The Knight’s Prisoner. I’ll talk about why it’s a favorite scene for me in the comments section following this post. Renee Rose Talks About Spanking Romance
Spanking is my thing. Romance is amazing and I love a “happily ever after” but really, in my opinion, every romance needs a good spanking.
What makes a good spanking romance?
All the elements of any good romance must be present, but the special dynamics of dominance and submission also play a huge role. The spanker (I’m trying to be gender neutral here) should be an alpha leader. The spankee could go either way – I write them submissive more often than not, because, well, I’m naturally submissive and I can relate to that personality type. But throwing a strong-willed character into a situation where he or she gets spanked can make for very exciting fireworks.
Risk is also a key element. Erotic spankings are hot, but if you up the risk a bit – make the spanking disciplinary, make it non-consensual or with dubious consent– the heat level rises exponentially. The trick is how to do so in a way that’s believable, yet not offensive, abusive or downright illegal. I like to write historical spanking romance, because corporal punishment was the norm in days gone by. It takes away the abuse/legality question, and societal consent stands in for the spankee’s consent.
My favorite historical time period is medieval. It’s beyond romantic for one thing– most every fairytale hails from this era of princes and princesses, knights in shining armor and damsels in distress. For another thing, it was a time in which the dynamic of dominance and submission was in full force. Husbands were “lords” over their wives. A lady was expected to kneel at his feet to remove his boots or otherwise serve him, and he was expected to gallantly protect. It’s pretty easy to make spanking fit into any medieval scenario more or less seamlessly.
I’ve written four medieval spanking novellas – two of which were just released: The Knight’s Prisoner, a story about a psychic prostitute who is kidnapped for her Sight, and the shorter novella Under Siege, which was published along with a story by Korey Mae Johnson in the book Lords and Ladies: Two Medieval Spanking Novellas.
Lords and Ladies: Two Medieval Spanking Novellas
Lords and Ladies is composed of two novellas filled with medieval adventure, sweet romance, bold men, feisty women, hot sex, and firm spankings.
UNDER SIEGE BY RENEE ROSE
For Lady Camilla, the only thing worse than managing Falconworth castle on her own would be her overlord discovering that she is a widow and marrying her off to his wretched nephew. Keeping her husband’s death a secret is a top priority, right up there with ensuring that troops from a rival castle don’t break down her curtain wall gate with their battering ram.
Yet when a devilishly handsome knight by the name of Sir Balen rides to her rescue, she is reluctant to turn over the control she has become accustomed to wielding. The attraction between them is palpable, but his arrogant assumption of the position and duties of her late husband irritates her, especially because those duties seem to include spanking her bare bottom!
Can she swallow her pride and propose the marriage which she knows would be best for all involved, or will her stubbornness cost her and the people of Falconworth dearly?
QUITE DECIDED BY KOREY MAE JOHNSON
When eighteen-year-old Wenda discovers that she is to be married off to a nobleman easily old enough to be her grandfather, she concocts a desperate plan to avoid that fate. Lord Talus, who was like an older brother to her growing up, will marry her instead—she is quite decided on it.
The only problem with this plan is the fact that Talus refuses it outright. Wenda has grown into a beautiful woman, but he has known her since she was a child and he cannot bring himself to expose her to the dark, hungry, sexual side of him which she would see as his wife.
Talus underestimates the lengths to which Wenda will go to carry out her plan, however, and he finds a marriage with her forced upon him by false allegations that he has stolen her maidenhood in the night. For her part Wenda soon learns, to her dismay, that her new husband is well within his rights to bare his young wife’s bottom and chastise her firmly for her scheming. Moreover, he intends to thoroughly enjoy every curve of her beautiful body once he feels the time is right to have his way with his new bride.
The Knight’s Prisoner
Danewyn, a tavern prostitute, has always been cursed with the Sight–the ability to see into the unknown. It is a trait she has learned to keep hidden from others, but a moment of anger finds her blurting out a prediction about the Red Fox, the rightful king of Britain. Unfortunately, her prediction is overheard by one of the Red Fox’s men, putting her in grave danger.
Captured and carried off for questioning, she finds herself prisoner to Sir Ferrum, an enormous knight who bears the scars of an old injury upon his face. She finds Sir Ferrum to be firm and unyielding, but his treatment of her also reveals a gentleness which she has difficulty reconciling with his harsh discipline. To her dismay, her feelings for him continue to grow, and Dani must decide whether to continue her plans for escape or accept her new role as Sir Ferrum’s woman and Seer to the Red Fox.
“The Knight’s Prisoner is an extremely scorching novel of sweeping romance and bitter betrayal. It is a novel that will grab a reader from the start and never let go. … I truly enjoyed reading and I have no doubt at all it will be a novel that will be cherished for years.” — Night Owl Reviews
An Excerpt From The Knight’s Prisoner
The Knight’s Prisoner features a “switch” scene. A “switch” is someone who changes role from submissive to dominant or vice versa. Though the heroine, Danewyn, still remains Sir Ferrum’s prisoner, in this scene, he offers to submit to her for a change.
“Sheep’s. Cunt. Those are the only two words I have to say to you right now, Ferrum. Go lick one!”
Ferrum sighed and gave Dani five more hard spanks before he pulled her up to stand. He was tempted to send her to fetch a switch, but spanking clearly wasn’t working. It was not even remotely effective. Respect had to be earned– he couldn’t beat it into her. They’d been at odds for days now– he’d delivered spankings as often as three times a day to no effect whatsoever. She obeyed him well enough outside the tent, it was the disrespect that was the problem. So it didn’t truly merit the strap or a switch, yet she continued to sass him and resented her spankings.
Oddly, she still offered herself up to him, night after night, seeming to want him even more after he’d spanked her. And God help him, he couldn’t possibly keep his hands off her when she tempted him. He’d flip her on her back and pinion her wrists, possessing her roughly before she could protest, not that she ever did.
She was standing before him now, her legs spread into a wide stance, her eyes flashing defiance, daring him into action. He needed to change his approach with her.
“Do you wish be in charge of me, Danewyn? Because I will follow.”
“When donkeys sing,” she sneered.
“I am completely serious.” He rubbed his hand over his scars. “Two people can’t lead, and you clearly resent my leadership, so I will follow you.”
She folded her arms across her chest, her eyes narrowed. “What kind of trick is this?”
He shook his head. “No trick.”
“Oh and I suppose you’d let me beat you like you beat me?”
“You may do as you wish to me. I doubt you’ll find that effective, but I’m sure you can come up with punishments that are. I will obey you, so long as your orders don’t interfere with the prince’s. ”
She looked at him warily. “You jest.”
He shook his head. “I do not jest. I’m not afraid of taking orders from you.”
“Take off your clothes,” she tested him.
He stood up and disrobed while she watched, the mistrust melting slightly from her face.
“Lie down. On your belly,” she said, indicating his bedroll with her chin.
He obeyed. He heard the rustle of clothing and turned his head to the side to watch her remove her outer dress, then pull his sword belt off the heap of his clothes. She stalked over to him with unmistakable purpose. His ball sack tightened. The thought of her whipping him was arousing. She stood at his side and swung the belt, catching his arse in the downward arc. The bite of it was a welcome sensation. His cock hardened. She lifted her arm again and swung again. He saw the darker tips of her nipples through the thin linen shift and the movement of her breasts as she swung the belt over and over again. Her face was flushed and her focus on her task intense. Her aim was poor, sometimes striking his legs, sometimes his back, but he didn’t mind. The sting of the leather added to the rising heat flowing through his veins, a molten lust that was rapidly transporting him to some other place, where only the two of them existed.
She paused, her breasts bouncing, her fine silky hair slipping free of its braid. I’m not hurting you at all, am I?” she panted. He couldn’t speak. Something in his face must have given him away because her eyes narrowed. She nudged her foot under his hips. “Roll over!”
He rolled over and his cock stood at full attention.
She made a noise of indignation. “You find this arousing? So, this is the trick of it!”
He smiled guiltily. “I didn’t tell you to whip me,” he reminded her. “Mayhap it’s not the whipping but the state of your undress that has me aroused.”
Her mouth twitched with a little smile. She swung her leg to straddle him in standing so he had a full view of her sex– that dark pink heart he so longed to caress. She was watching his face, and she must have liked what she saw because her lips curved into a seductive smile. She’d seen the power she had over him. Slowly, sensually, she pulled the shift up, revealing more of her legs, then the provocative curves of her perfect arse, traveling up over her flat belly and finally freeing those magnificent bobbing breasts as she pulled it off her head and tossed it to the ground.
He wanted to grab her and yank her down on top of him, but he controlled himself. She was in charge now. She was his master. And the idea of that was just as arousing to him as the idea of dominating her. She reached her fingers down and stroked her sex and his breath escaped him in a soft moan. With two fingers she spread the lips of her sex wide for his view. “Is this what you want?” she asked, her voice low and throaty.
“Aye,” he gasped.
The wicked smile curved on her lips again.
“Beg for it.”

I think the spanker does need to be the dominant one; it’s hard to imagine a submissive person being the spanker. I also agree that risk heightens the eroticism. I’d also add that park of the risk is doing something that society would consider taboo or naughty. Breaking the rules.
Very interesting interview, I’d love to read the book.
Thank you Wilma, I hope you do!
You mentioned that you favor the Medieval time period for spanking romances because it is easier to manage non-consensual spanking in that time period because social consent stands in somewhat for the spankee’s consent.
Do you also have favorite plot lines…like marriage under duress…kidnapping stories…damsel in distress…etc?
Good question! Yes, all of those. I love the abduction/seduction plotline and the arranged marriage holds a lot of special potential – I feature that one in my Italian Renaissance Loving Lucia. I like damsel in distress IF the damsel is reluctant to accept help (tries to be strong and does it herself, etc).
Where does one buy Loving Lucia? Is it available at Amazon? Do you have a broader backlist? How about giving us a run down of everything that’s out there and where we can find it…maybe with a mini (or full) blurb.
Yes, I like the abduction plotlines too…and arranged marriage. I tend to like plotlines in which the characters are forced to be together…where they don’t have an option to get apart. That usually sets up a lot of sparks and a lot of sexual tension and I like that…in both spanking and non-spanking romance.
Yes, I’m right there with you– that’s totally my favorite too.
Yes, Loving Lucia is available on amazon:
It has a companion book, Courting Celia, which is also set in the Italian Renaissance featuring Lucia’s twin.
Betrothed was my first Medieval novella, and possibly still my best seller – it’s your typical Shakespearean cross-dressing scenario in which the heroine dresses as a page and inadvertently joins her intended’s army to escape her betrothal.
Deathless Love is a contemporary paranormal featuring a young woman secretly interested in spanking, her vampire boss who takes her over his knee, and the surrounding vampire drama that threatens all their lives
Pleasing the Colonel is a regency spanking romance about a young governess who is corporally punished by her strict employer
I also have a couple contemporary short stories – one that’s always free on Smashwords called The Elusive “O”
Wow Renee! I didn’t realize you had such a hefty backlist. That makes me happy as I can buy more of your books…and hoard them…which is what I do with favorite authors usually.
I haven’t yet read Lords & Ladies. But I’m curious…what’s next for you. What are you working on now? What’s your next release?
I just released another short medieval novella entitled Lady Meriwyn’s Punishment to the member-only site Bethany’s Woodshed, so it won’t be available to the general public for a few months. After that, I have a short story in the domestic discipline anthology Coming to Terms and I’m working on a California Gold Rush brothel story.
Oooh…California Gold Rush brothel…that sounds like a yummy set-up. I can’t wait to read that one. I’m a fan of western historicals or anything that has a western historical feel to it.
It sounds like you’re going to be very busy. What is your writing schedule like? Do you write every day? Do you have a specific time you write? Do you consider yourself a fast or slow writer? Do you write a story all the way through and then go back to polish or do you polish as you go?
I did think I was pretty fast, but lately it’s been harder to get things written. I am a get it all out and then go back and polish type.
This is my first western, and I’m having a lot of fun writing it. I live in the west, so in a way, it’s not a particularly romantic time period for me, but as I get into the historical details of the Gold Rush, I’m fascinated!
Hmm it seems lіke your sіtе

guess Ι’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thοroughly enjοying your blog.
I too am an aspіring blog writer but I’m still new to the whole thing. Do you have any tips and hints for rookie blog writers? I’d reallу аpρreciаte іt.
I didn’t see any other comment from you – long or short in the spam or in comments waiting for moderation.
I’m glad to hear that you are enjoying the blog.
My biggest tip for rookie blog writers would be don’t try to make the blog be all about you. You’ll notice that this blog is owned by Black Velvet Seductions. We publish romance and romantic spanking stories…but we don’t just talk about our own books here. We have guest authors come and share their books and their opinions on various aspects of writing and reading. Having other people guest on the blog gives you a broader appeal because other people have things to contribute that you might not even have thought of.
This blog is hosted privately (not at wordpress.org or wordpress.com – we get our hosting through Hostgator, which I highly recommend. Adding a blog to your site there is very, very easy. I recommend WordPress as a platform.
If you’re interested in creating your own themes, I recommend the program Artisteer which allows you to make themes for a variety of platforms…not just WordPress.
I guess those would be my top bits of advice.
I’m pretty sure that was a spam comment.
I thought it might be. It was tagged as spam but it links to a book listing on Amazon…so I thought what the heck…I’d answer. Maybe the advice will be helpful to someone.
These sound like great reads. I love Medieval times and erotic romances. I have added these all to my tbr list. Thanks for sharing the excerpt.
Thank you, Gabrielle!! I hope you enjoy!
Wow, what a great scene. I have the book but haven’t started it yet. Need to now! Great to see you here, Renee.
Thank you for stopping over, Jade!! And I hope you enjoy the Knight’s Prisoner!
Hi Jade,
Good to see you here. I recognize you from the Spanking Fiction Group at Facebook.
I’ve got your book on my TBR list.
Nice. Good to see you, Laurie! Enjoy and keep in touch.
J
Thank you for having me today, Laurie! I’m glad that was one of your favorite scenes, too!
It was indeed Renee. There is something powerful about a guy who is willing to follow when following is what he needs to do to make his partner see that she doesn’t really want to lead.
I also like that he is willing to change course…that he doesn’t see spanking as the cure for every issue within the relationship. He’s tried it…it’s not working as he hoped it would…so he tries something else.
I really liked the characters…both of them. Dani is a strong character with a lot of spunk, as is clear in the excerpt. Yet, she’s also impacted by her psychic ability which she sees as a negative, not a gift. She also feels unworthy in some ways because she was a prostitute before she was kidnapped by Ferrum and his men.
There was a lot to like in the book. It’s one of my favorites in the spanking romance sub-genre.
Thank you, I was really fond of this one too– mostly because despite their unique abduction/prisoner situation, the masculine and feminine energies were pretty well balance. Also, they engaged in a lot of hot spanking and sex, which is always a bonus!!
And a lot of hot dialogue too. I really liked Dani’s dialogue. It was easy to believe in her character…partly because of the way she talks…especially when she’s angry.
It was a fun book…lots of spanking…but still covered all the romance bases.
