Please welcome my friend, author J.D Faver, to the blog today. J.D. writes romantic suspense — mostly — though she also writes some of the funniest blog posts I’ve read on an author’s blog. Today J.D. is talking about writing outside the lines…and she has a couple of great free downloads to pass on to everyone. You’ll want to download her latest romantic thriller On Ice and her friend Tara Manderino’s Bound By Blood which is also a free download at Amazon today.

Welcome J.D!

Outside The Lines

By J.D. Faver

Thanks so much for inviting me to your blog, Laurie. I’ve learned a lot from you over the years. I’m always quoting the information you’ve shared in classes and referring writers to your site. Any success I’m enjoying is due, in large part, to your teaching and guidance. *hugs* (Yes, I’m a fan)

I’m finding that my writing is evolving into a new genre for me and that is Romantic Thriller. I didn’t give my work that distinction, but reviewers used that phrase to describe my latest novels. I have gone from Romantic Suspense to a bit darker story, taking a step beyond the mystery/suspense. Like you, Laurie, I’m trying to color way outside the lines.

I am excited to share that my 102k word novel, ON ICE, is FREE today on Amazon. If you don’t have a Kindle or Nook or other reading device, just download the FREE Kindle for PC right there on Amazon and you can read ON ICE and other novels. Here is the blurb for ON ICE:

A terrified woman erases her past to escape her abusive husband. Taking her children, she disappears from Texas only to reinvent herself as a teacher in a remote Alaskan village. She fights to survive the harsh environment, while ever mindful of the danger stalking her. A complication emerges in the form of her new boss who is unaware of her entanglement and pursues her with a passion. Hungry for a father figure, her young children immediately take to him, but she is haunted by the cruel man who battered her. Can a good man heal her scars and gain her trust? As she evolves in her new role, she becomes stronger as a person. Back in Texas, her sister draws the abuser’s fury and becomes his new victim. When her past catches up with her, she is not the same woman who ran away. She puts her life on the line to protect her children, but will she survive the wrath of a sociopath bent on revenge?

And let me share another FREE book to download today. My friend and blogmate, Tara Manderino (another Laurie fan) has her novel, BOUND BY BLOOD, available as a FREE download on Amazon. This is the blurb:

In his two-hundred and fifty years as a vampire, Alex only observed, never intervened with any of his progeny, yet what else can he do when a little girl of his lineage is kidnapped? When he meets Lisa, the child’s nanny, his protective instincts kick into gear, yet he finds he must expose her to ever increasing danger as they search for the missing child. To protect Lisa from perils she is unaware of, he harbors her in his own home.
With Lisa’s help, Alex is able to determine who has the child. Learning why she was abducted rocks him on his heels and sets off a transcontinental search that leads to ancient myths of the Cardinal’s Ruby; the stone in Alex’s ring.
Alex and Lisa have one shot to save the child, but will they be able to stop the impending destruction raining down?

  • Tara says:

Lines are so overrated, JD. On Ice is a gripping read, and certainly couldn’t have been done if you stayed within the lines. And Bad Girl! — another of your thrillers — was the same.

    • JD Faver says:

Thanks so much, Tara. I’m thrilled that you like my thrillers. To tell the truth, I can’t even see the lines from here. I think I’ve gone rogue.

  • Laurie Sanders says:

Welcome to the blog J.D.! Thank you for all the praise and kudos.

I hope you have a fun visit.

You mentioned in your post that ON ICE is a divergence from your normal genre…dipping into darker territory.

How are readers reacting to the differences between what you usually write and ON ICE? Readers can sometimes be less than accepting when an author shifts away from what they expect from the author to write something a bit different. What, if anything, have you done to ease readers into this transition?

From your post it sounds like you are enjoying coloring outside the lines…dipping into darker fare. Are you planning to continue doing that? How so?

What’s next on your agenda? What are you writing now?

    • JD Faver says:

I seem to have 3 layers of sales on Amazon. Two cute and sexy contemporary romances with a lot of humor. (small number of sales on Amazon but selling well on Barnes & Noble) 4 romantic suspense are selling very well. Two are in my best sellers and have hit a couple of the best seller lists on Amazon. And the last two, ON ICE and BAD MEDICINE, are darker and have earned the description of Romantic Thrillers by review sites. I’m kind of loving it.
The sequel to BAD MEDICINE is edited, formatted and ready to roll…Just waiting on the cover. And the 3rd in the series is in the polishing state.
My favorite part of being an author is getting comments from readers. I love to know what they like and how they like it.
Another thrill for me is to see sales outside the US. Knowing that someone in Germany or Italy is reading one of my novels always gives me great pleasure.
At the moment, I have 2 different writing projects in the works. One is a sequel to Badlands. I mean, who doesn’t love a cowboy? And I’m also working on a YA fantasy series. Always coloring outside the lines.
      *hugs*
