We just had a character interview with Steve Williams from J.E. Taylor’s book Hunting Season here on the blog. Several of you have written to say that you enjoyed the character interview and find them fun.
That leads me to wonder…what is it you want to know when you read an interview with a character in a book or series you haven’t read yet?
What do you want to know when you read an interview with a character in a book or series you have read?
Does what you want to know differ from sub-genre to sub-genre?
I’m curious…if you were asking the interview questions what questions would you ask?

It is nice to know what the characters desire, and what they will do to obtain it.
I would like to know the same type of things from a character interview that I would from anyone I’m trying to get to know. For me, I think the sub-genre might influence the questions I would ask.
It’s always nice to find out just what makes a character tick or something that makes them different that may not have been in the book. Having a character interview makes them seem more personable.
I want to find out enough about the character(s) to get a feel for a part of their personalities and learn some information about the story. Their humor or edgy traits and find out some of their beliefs.
It’s like reading a blurb or looking at the book cover, something just has to get my attention and make me have to read that story.
I’m with Jane on this, I too want to know stuff like their personality and character traits.
It certainly wouldn’t be any different regardless of which genre the character came from.
I want character interviews to give me first hand information. Some otherwise unknown knowledge.
I want to get a perspective as to what the character is like, their personality. The things I want to know about a character would probably not differ from sub-genre to sub-genre.
